The Embracer Group has announced that it has agreed to acquire Bitwave Games, Gioteck, Limited Run Games, Middle-Earth Enterprises, Singtrix, Tatsujin, Tripwire Interactive and Tuxedo Labs. Fees were not disclosed but Middle-Earth Enterprises, which owns the rights to The Lord of the Rings video games, books and movies, will end up costing around $1 billion.
Limited Run Games will continue to operate independently and Middle-Earth Enterprises will be transferred to a new division of Embracer titled Freemode. The Embracer Group will also explore the possibility of spin-off movies set in The Lord of the Rings universe, including a movie based on Gandalf.
Tatsujin will be Embracer’s first studio based in Japan, the studio will begin working on bringing its arcade classics to modern platforms and prepare to “shepherd them into the future”. No other details about the acquisitions were revealed.
