The Saudi Arabian Public Authority for Media has confirmed that it has banned Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XVI from releasing in the country. The banned was made because of the “publisher’s unwillingness to make the necessary modifications”, essentially meaning that Square Enix refused to censor the game to meet the standards of the governing body. Several other games have been banned in Saidi Arabia for including sexual content, homosexual content, gambling, excessive violence and drug or alcohol usage. Square Enix has yet to comment on the ban.

Final Fantasy XVI is due out on the 22nd of June 2023 for the PlayStation 5.

Here are some of the games banned in Saudi Arabia:

  • Fallout: New Vegas
  • Dragon Age: Origins
  • The Last of Us Part II
  • All God of War games before God of War (2018)
  • Gal Gun
