New job listings from Naughty Dog have hinted that the studio’s upcoming standalone The Last of Us multiplayer game may be free-to-play. Applicants for the positions are expected to have experience working on a “AAA, free to play, live title”. This likely means that Naughty Dog is planning on releasing the game as a free-to-play title.
The Last of Us multiplayer game was originally planned as a multiplayer mode that was to be bundled with The Last of Us Part II. The project eventually grew so ambitious that Naughty Dog decide to make it a standalone title. The game will feature a “story of its own that is unique to the game” with a new cast of characters.
Not much else is known about the game. The game could also be the first game from PlayStation Studios to launch day and date on PC as Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, confirmed that Sony Interactive Entertainment would release live-service games on PC the same day as consoles.
