Stars and Stripes, a U.S. Military newsletter, has reported that Kazuki Takahashi, creator of the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise, passed away whilst trying to aid one of its officers in saving people caught in a riptide at Mermaid’s Grotto in Okinawa.
Major Robert Bourgeau claims that Takahashi-san joined his group but that he did not see him however his students spotted him before he disappeared under the water.
Bourgeau was recognised by the U.S. Military for saving three people, he said that Takahashi-san is a hero as “he died trying to save someone else”. The Japanese coastguard has yet to confirm if Takahashi-san was attempting to aid people when he passed away.
Takahashi-san passed away on the 4th of July 2022, he was 60 years old.
