Masayoshi Yokoyama, president of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, has confirmed that the studio is looking into the possibility of switching to Unreal Engine 5. According to Yokoyama-san, the Dragon Engine is beginning to show its age and the team has only made minor updates to it. Yokoyama-san claims that the studio is assessing whether it should make a major update to the engine or switch to Unreal Engine 5. Like a Dragon: Ishin, a remake of Yakuza: Ishin!, is being built on Unreal Engine 4 from the ground up.
Yokoyama-san has also credited Sucker Punch Productions’ Ghost of Tsushima for the release of Like a Dragon: Ishin, saying that despite the positive reception of Yakuza: Ishin! in Japan Sega were not sure that the game would perform well in the West. Sega initially believed that it would not be worth localising and that it would alienate Western audiences but they were eventually swayed by the massive success of Ghost of Tsushima, especially in America, and decided to greenlight the project.
