Stephane D’Astous, founder of Eidos Montreal, has revealed that he’s heard mumblings that Sony is interested in acquiring the Japanese divisions of Square Enix. D’Astous claims that the rumors going around was that Sony was interested in having the Japanese arm of Square Enix in its “wheelhouse” but not the rest of it.

This, according to D’Astous, is why Square Enix sold Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal, and Square Enix Montreal along with the studios IP for a cheap price, or “like a garage sale”. This is not the first time Sony has been linked with acquiring Square Enix, both Venturebeat’s Jeff Grubb and Kinda Funny’s Greg Miller have confirmed that their sources have claimed that Sony was working on acquiring Square Enix.

Sony Interactive Entertainment also recently hired Gregory McCurdy, a former antitrust lawyer at Uber, which was likely done to prepare for a major acquisition. Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, has also confirmed that the company are working on more acquisitions.
