Sony Group Corporation has released its financial results for the third quarter of the 2021 financial year, this is for the three month period ending on the 31st of December 2021. Below you can find a breakdown of both Sony’s overall performance and Sony Interactive Entertainment’s performance.

Highlights:

  • 3.9 million PlayStation 5 consoles were shipped over the three month period. The PS5 has shipped over 17.3 million units as of the 31st of December 2021.
  • 200,000 PlayStation 4 consoles were shipped over the three month period. The PS4 has shipped over 116.8 million units as of the 31st of December 2021.
  • 92.7 million games were sold across the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, 11.3 million of which were first-party titles.
  • The digital ratio for the three month period was 62%.
  • PlayStation Plus subscriptions are over 48 million, this is up year-over-year and is a new record for PS+.
  • Monthly active users on PS4 and PS5 are over 111 million.
  • This was the second best quarter in the history of PlayStation and the second best quarter for a platform holder.
  • Over $900 million was generated from PlayStation services (PlayStation Plus, PlayStation Now etc), this is a new quarterly record.
  • Sony Interactive Entertainment revenue for the 2021 calendar year was ¥2734.9 / $24.91 billion, this is the second highest in the industry.

Stats:

  • 11.66 PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games were sold each second. Free-to-play and free games are not included.
  • 624,000 digital games were sold each day on the PlayStation Network. Free-to-play and free games are not included.
  • The PS5 has shipped fewer units than the PS4 in the same timeframe but this is due to supply constraints.
  • 7.42 billion was spent on investments as of the 31st of December 2021.

Sony Financial Performance:

  • Revenue: ¥3031.3B / $26.66B (up 12.4% year-over-year)
  • Operating Profit: ¥465.2B / $4.09B (up 29.5% year-over-year)
  • Net Profit: ¥346.2B / $3.05B (down 6.9% year-over-year)

Note: This was the best revenue and operating profit recorded by Sony in the companies history.
