Hakan Abrak, co-owner and CEO of IO Interactive, has confirmed that the studio has received multiple “attractive” acquisition offers since splitting from Square Enix. According to Abrak all of the acquisition offers would have made things easier but they wanted to try and remain independent. Abrak also revealed that one of the parties that tried to acquire the studio wanted to make Hitman (2016) a free-to-play game but the management team at IO Interactive didn’t believe that it suited the game.
Abrak also revealed how IO Interactive became an independent studio. In June 2017 Io Interactive negotiated an MBO (management buyout) and the process was complete about 15 months after the release of Hitman (2016). IO Interactive had about three months of cash flow to keep the studio running. Abrak also confirmed that Hitman (2016) took 4 years to recoup its costs whilst Hitman 2 recouped its costs far quicker and Hitman 3 recouped its costs within its first week of release.
IO Interactive’s latest game, Hitman 3, is available on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series and Stadia. IO Interactive have also confirmed that Hitman 3 will not be the last game in the franchise.
