A new report from The Information has revealed that the U.S. Justice Department has extended its antitrust review of Sony’s agreement to acquire Crunchyroll. The report claims that the extension was made in order to investigate whether the acquisition would give Sony dominance over anime streaming. The extension could delay the acquisition by up to 6 months, it could also result in the Justice Department suing to prevent the acquisition. Sony had reached an agreement to acquire Crunchyroll from AT&T in December 2020 for $1.175 billion in cash. Sony and Crunchyroll have yet to comment on the claim.
